On June 8, ICITAP counter–improvised explosive device advisors initiated a recertification course on counter–improvised explosive device tools and locate-render-safe procedures for bomb technicians of the Unité Spéciale d’Intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale in Burkina Faso, building directly on a capability assessment conducted by ICITAP in February 2023 and a prior course delivered in September 2024. Held at Camp Kamboinsin, the one-week program combined classroom instruction, hands-on practical exercises, and scenario-based training using previously donated equipment as well as additional systems scheduled for donation at course completion, ensuring continuity between U.S.-supported material assistance and operational training outcomes. Participants were evaluated on technical proficiency, knowledge retention from earlier ICITAP engagements, and their ability to apply newly introduced advanced render-safe procedures in accordance with globally recognized best practices for explosive ordnance disposal and counter–improvised explosive device operations. Written and practical assessments reinforced core competencies required to safely detect, assess, and neutralize hazardous devices, while strengthening unit-level standardization and readiness. The opening ceremony, attended by representatives of the United States Embassy in Ouagadougou and senior command staff of the host unit, underscored the sustained partnership supporting Burkina Faso’s counterterrorism and force protection capabilities in an increasingly complex security environment. This ICITAP-mentored training reflects measurable progress toward building a sustainable, cohesive national capability to counter explosive threats, directly contributing to the protection of civilians, security forces, and critical infrastructure from terrorist and extremist violence. By strengthening host-nation capacity to address improvised explosive device threats, the program advances United States national security interests by reducing the operational effectiveness of terrorist organizations, enhancing regional stability in the Sahel, and mitigating risks posed to United States citizens and allied partners abroad. These efforts are aligned with the priorities of the U.S. Embassy and implemented in Burkina Faso in close coordination with the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Counterterrorism (CT).
