On May 5, ICITAP personnel joined representatives from the Regional Security Office (RSO), senior officials from the Government of Albania, the Albanian State Police (ASP), and international law enforcement partners to commemorate Albania’s National Martyrs Day and honor 231 police officers killed in the line of duty. Hosted at the State Police Memorial at the Albanian Security Academy, the ceremony brought together families of fallen officers, special police units, cadets, and senior leadership in a solemn recognition of sacrifice and service. Speakers emphasized that the police uniform represents not only authority but a moral commitment to protect society at great personal risk, noting that the legacy of fallen officers endures through institutional integrity and public trust. For ICITAP, participation in this event reinforces its mission to strengthen partner nation law enforcement capacity, professionalism, and resilience against organized crime and corruption, which are key drivers of instability with transnational consequences. The commemoration also highlighted the enduring impact of organized crime violence, including the targeted killing of a senior ASP officer whose investigative work disrupted criminal networks, and whose legacy continues through a family member now serving in a senior leadership role within Albania’s National Bureau of Investigation. These sacrifices underscore the direct link between effective, ethical policing abroad and United States national security interests, as strong international partners are essential to countering illicit trafficking, dismantling criminal organizations, and promoting regional stability. By standing alongside Albanian counterparts in honoring the fallen, ICITAP affirms its commitment to advancing the rule of law and fostering trusted law enforcement institutions that contribute to a safer global environment, with support from the United States Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).
